Chachi 420 was shot on film, but for years, no clean 1080p or 4K master existed. Most DVDs and TV broadcasts were from an old, faded interpositive with cropped edges and muffled audio. In 2022, a small restoration team allegedly found a near-pristine release print in a Kolkata film archive. That print was scanned at 2K and color-graded scene-by-scene. The resulting 1080p version (often mislabeled as "AI-upscaled") actually reveals Kamal Haasan's dual-performance nuances: the texture of his prosthetics as Chachi, the grain in low-light comedy scenes, and the original framing (1.85:1) restored.

The official 1080p version is available on ZEE5 Global (streaming) and as a limited-edition Blu-ray from Bombay Video Palace (2023). Seek those first; the "restoration story" makes it worth supporting.
