Nora checked her ammo. Twelve rounds left. She looked at her Pip-Boy. The red screen now displayed a single word:
They were clones.

Then he charged.
Pale, shaven-headed men in black leather and green armor, their faces locked in permanent, fanatical scowls. They carried guns that fired not bullets, but searing white-hot bolts of plasma that melted through her combat armor like tissue paper. She dove behind a crumbling altar as a bolt vaporized the rock next to her head.
"Die, Allied swine!" one of them shrieked in a clipped, theatrical accent. Nora checked her ammo
The elevator rose. Nora slid down the wall, clutching her shoulder, the sound of his gunfire echoing up the shaft like thunder from a dying world.
He didn't even raise the chaingun.
He tossed her toward the elevator. She slammed the button with her good arm as the doors closed, his chaingun spinning up. The last thing she saw was his face, contorted with a century of betrayed patriotism, screaming through the shrinking gap.
The voice was a gargled roar, filtered through a century of static and pure, undiluted rage. Nora yanked the earpiece out, heart hammering. When she put it back in, the screen had changed. The usual green monochrome was bleeding into a harsh, angular red. The Vault-Tec logo had been replaced by a snarling, stylized eagle. The red screen now displayed a single word:
