Melinda Gordon, a newlywed who owns an antique shop in the fictional town of Grandview, New York, has been able to see and communicate with earthbound spirits since childhood. In the series premiere, a ghostly young boy in a military uniform appears in her shop. He is Paul Adams, a World War II pilot who died in the Pacific. Paul believes he is still engaged to his fiancée, Elizabeth, who is now an elderly woman living in a nursing home. With the help of her husband, Jim Clancy (a paramedic), Melinda helps Paul realize the truth: Elizabeth moved on, married someone else, and had a full life. Paul must choose to cross over into the light. Meanwhile, a secondary ghost—a young man named Carlos—tries to contact his grieving girlfriend through Melinda.
