“No.” Kouko walks down the steps, past Mitsuo, and stops in front of Linda. She’s shorter, but she doesn’t flinch. “You’re the one from the hospital. You visited him while he was unconscious. The nurses mentioned a girl with braids. That was you.”

But that night, at the inn, a summer festival fireworks show begins. As the first rocket explodes, Banri freezes. A full-blown flashback hits:

A teenage Linda, gripping his arm on a crowded festival bridge. “Don’t go,” she whispers. “Please. I’ll tell you. I’ll tell you everything.” But young Banri pulls away. “I can’t stay here. I can’t be your friend anymore, Linda. It hurts too much.”
