Jimmy stood up slowly. He walked to his bookshelf and pulled down the holy grail: the 2007 Warner Bros. Blu-ray. The real one. The one with the warm color timing and the living, breathing grain.

And then Henry Hill came calling.

The Beaver nodded once. Then he paid for the drinks and left. Three months later, the Goodfellas Ultimate Collector’s Edition arrived. Jimmy reviewed it on DVDBeaver under the headline: Goodfellas Dvdbeaver

“What do you want?” Gary whispered.

Jimmy loaded the disc. His 65-inch OLED flickered to life. The Copa shot. The long tracking shot. But something was wrong. The faces were waxy. The shadows were crushed into black voids. He gave it five stars. The grain was there. The shadows were deep. And Joe Pesci looked like a real human being about to stab a kid with a pen. The real one

Jimmy froze the frame on Joe Pesci’s face. It looked like a mannequin.

Jimmy leaned in. He pulled out a USB stick. On it was a frame-by-frame comparison. Side by side. The 2007 Blu-ray. The 4K degrained atrocity. And in the third column—the killer—a screenshot from the actual 35mm print struck at the Museum of Modern Art.

“Gary,” Jimmy said, his voice low. “You told me this was gonna be definitive. You told me ‘film-like integrity.’ This ain’t film. This is a goddamn digital fart.”

Because for a reviewer, the ultimate score wasn’t money or respect. It was the perfect bitrate.
