Mamed Aliyev — Gta

If you follow the contemporary art scene in the Caucasus or Central Asia, one name is starting to appear with increasing frequency: Gta Mamed Aliyev .

At first glance, the name might seem like a mix of codes— Gta reads like a gamer tag, Mamed is a common Turkic name, and Aliyev is one of the most widespread surnames in Azerbaijan. But that blending of the hyper-modern with deep cultural roots is exactly what defines Aliyev’s work. Born in Baku in the early 1990s—just as Azerbaijan was finding its footing after the fall of the Soviet Union—Aliyev grew up in a world of transition. Old Soviet realism was fading, Western pop culture was flooding in, and oil money was beginning to reshape the capital’s skyline. gta mamed aliyev
