Peau d’Âne is a 1970 French musical fantasy film directed by Jacques Demy, co-written with his frequent collaborator, the poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert. The film is an adaptation of the classic 1694 fairy tale of the same name by Charles Perrault.
The story follows a beautiful princess (Catherine Deneuve) who flees an incestuous marriage proposal from her widowed father, the king (Jean Marais). With the help of her fairy godmother (Delphine Seyrig), she escapes disguised in the dirty, magical skin of a magical donkey that once produced gold coins. She finds work as a lowly scullery maid at a neighboring farm, where a prince (Jacques Perrin) falls in love with her after glimpsing her true beauty.
