He’d laughed when he installed it. Now, shivering on a windswept beach, he wasn’t laughing.

He dodged into a blacksmith’s shack, slammed the iron door shut (iron doors still worked, thank the code), and huddled in the corner as the thing scraped its claws against the outside wall.
He didn’t have a bed. The villagers were gone. The only bed he’d seen was in the church, and the church had a hole in its roof and a pool of water that smelled like rot.
