8.5/10 – A beautiful, free panic attack.
Small Complex v3.1 is like a fever dream you control. It is slow, obtuse, and occasionally broken. But that’s the point. It captures the feeling of being trapped in your own head better than most AAA horror games. You won't "win." You will simply understand why you feel small.
Small Complex isn't trying to scare you with jump scares. It wants to crawl under your skin and remind you of every anxious thought you've had at 3 AM. Version 3.1 polishes the experience into a must-play for fans of The Beginner's Guide or Anatomy . What is "Small Complex"? You wake up in your apartment. It looks like your apartment—same crack in the ceiling, same blue coffee mug. Except the front door is gone, and the window now looks out onto a blank, white void. You are trapped in a loop of rooms that feel familiar but are subtly, horrifyingly wrong.
Make sure you get v3.1 from the official itch.io page or the developer's Patreon (free tier). Some third-party sites are still hosting the buggy v2.9 build where the lights don't turn off. Reviewed on Windows 10, 16GB RAM, RTX 2060.
Version Reviewed: 3.1 (Free Download) Genre: Psychological Horror / Puzzle / Walking Simulator Playtime: 2.5 hours (for 100% v3.1 content)
The goal? Find the "exit key." The reality? The game is about realizing there is no exit. The free update (v3.1) doesn't add explosions or monsters. It adds memory echoes . You’ll now hear fragmented voicemails playing from under the floorboards. There’s a new "Mold Room" (I won't spoil it, but bring headphones), and the inventory system no longer crashes when you combine the "Wet Note" with the "Lightbulb."
