Scott Fitzgerald called "a sign of a first-rate intelligence." It demands that you do not smooth over the contradictions, but rather build a bridge that can bear the weight of reality. If analysis is a scalpel, synthesis is a loom. You cannot force it with a checklist, but you can cultivate the conditions.
It is easy to create a synthesis that is neat, logical, and utterly wrong. In the 19th century, phrenologists synthesized anatomy and psychology to claim that skull bumps determined personality. It was a beautiful synthesis. It was also nonsense.
