This paper argues that the Hindi-dubbed version functions not merely as a translation but as a distinct cultural artifact that re-contextualizes British folk horror tropes within North Indian popular cinema conventions. Through comparative analysis of the original English dialogue and the Hindi localization, this study identifies three key transformations: the amplification of mythological framing, the vernacularization of supernatural rules, and the addition of melodic exclamations during jump scares. The paper concludes that Hindi dubbing of niche Western horror creates a hybrid genre—"desi horror"—that caters to a young, bilingual, streaming-native audience. 1. Introduction In April 2022, Gold Valley Films (fictional distributor) released the Hindi-dubbed version of The Jack in the Box Awakening on ZEE5. The original film, directed by Lawrence Fowler, follows a museum curator who accidentally reactivates a cursed 19th-century jack-in-the-box that kills six people before granting one wish. The Hindi dub, titled जैक इन द बॉक्स: जागरण ( Jaak In The Box: Jaagran ), replaced the original's somber English dialogue with heightened, dramatic deliveries, added explanatory prologues about pret yonis (ghost realms), and substituted the original folk tune "Pop Goes the Weasel" with a distorted version of the bandar bant street rhyme.
