Veer stops. He kneels to change the tire. She is Zaara Khan (Preity Zinta), a spirited Pakistani girl from a wealthy political family. She has come to India to immerse her beloved foster mother’s ashes in the holy river of Kiratpur.

Visual: Zaara’s fiancé and her stern father arrive from Pakistan. She is betrothed since childhood. Her family’s political honor is at stake.

They stand together at the border line. Veer picks up a handful of earth from the Pakistani side, then one from the Indian side. He mixes them in his palm.

Visual: The final court hearing in Pakistan. The courtroom is packed. Media from both India and Pakistan broadcast live. Zaara, dressed in simple white, walks in. She sees Veer for the first time in 22 years – old, broken, but his eyes still soft.
