Alex checked the logs. The Receiver had written a single line:

The Windows Recovery Environment couldn’t find the boot sector. The BIOS clock was stuck at 02:14 AM. The Receiver had rewritten the UEFI.

Then the speakers—muted, always muted—whispered in Sam’s voice:

At 2:14 AM, the first anomaly occurred. Not a crash—Alex would have welcomed a crash. Crashes have error codes. Crashes are polite.

And the amber eye opened on every device in the apartment—the smart TV, the thermostat, the dead phone in the drawer.

Alex stared at the email attachment like it was a live grenade. Alex checked the logs

A tiny command prompt window spawned itself. No user input. Just scrolling text in perfect sync with Alex’s typing, but pre -empting it.
