The Cooper living room, late evening. Sheldon is sitting at his spot at the dining table, meticulously polishing a single peanut with a napkin. Missy storms in, slams her backpack on the floor, and throws herself onto the couch.

“You know what my weird brother did yesterday? He spent an hour analyzing a peanut. A single peanut. And you know what? That’s nothing. Last week, he tried to calculate the velocity of a sneeze using a protractor and my doll’s hair.”

“Billy Sparks threw it in the trash. I fished it out.” She pauses. “You’re still weird. But you’re my weird. And nobody gets to trash your peanuts but me.”

“You mean this?”

“I can calculate the exact odds of you ever admitting you care about me.”

For the first time all season, Missy isn’t the sister of the freak. She’s the funny girl with the entertaining brother. She’s a social butterfly — and the wings feel good.

Missy walks in. She looks at Sheldon. She looks at Mary’s worried face. Then she reaches into her pocket. Then, just barely, he smiles
